Moderate a community
Review posts and comments reported by members, remove content with a note to its author, and mute or disable a member who breaks the rules.
Moderation has two sides: members tell you what is wrong, and you decide what happens to the content and to its author. When you finish this article you will know where reports land and which tool fits which problem.
How members report content
Any member can open the ⋮ menu on someone else's post or comment and choose Report. The Report to moderators window asks for an optional reason and confirms with "Reported. Thanks for helping keep this community safe."
Review the reports
Open the queue
In the community editor open Moderation (/communities/<productId>/editor/moderation). The
menu entry shows the number of waiting reports, and the Reports to review tile on
Overview opens the same screen. With nothing waiting you see "No open reports. Members can
report posts and comments to you."
Read the report
Each row shows the Reported content (tagged Post or Comment, with its author), the number of Reports it received and the time of the Last report.
Dismiss or remove
Dismiss closes the report and leaves the content in place; you see Report dismissed. Remove opens Remove reported content?: "The content will be removed and its author will get a notification with your note." Add a note, for example which rule was broken, and confirm with Remove. You see Content removed.
Check the history
Decisions move to Recently resolved, with the Outcome (Removed or Dismissed) and the time it was Resolved.
The author of removed content gets a bell notification: "A moderator removed your content in [community name]."
Act on a member
In the community itself, click a member's name or avatar to open their Profile panel. People with moderation rights see a small shield button, Moderate, at the end of the row of actions.
| Action | Effect | Permission needed |
|---|---|---|
| Mute for 1 hour / 24 hours / 7 days | The member can still read, but cannot write posts or comments, react, or vote in polls until the time passes. The mute ends by itself. | Mute members |
| Unmute | Ends a mute early. | Mute members |
| Disable member | Asks Disable this member? "They immediately lose access to the community (their posts stay). You can re-enable them from the members panel." | Manage members |
The shield is not shown on your own profile or on the owner's. To bring a disabled member back, open Members list in the editor and use Activate (Manage members).
Remove content directly
You do not need a report to act. The owner, admins and roles with Moderate posts or Moderate comments can open the ⋮ menu on any post or comment and Edit or Delete it. For a post, Settings can also switch off new comments or hide the discussion without deleting anything (Write a post).
Which tool for which problem
| Problem | Tool |
|---|---|
| One post or comment breaks the rules | Remove from the queue, or Delete on the content |
| A thread is getting out of hand | Post Settings: turn off Adding comments |
| A member needs to cool down | Mute for an hour, a day or a week |
| A member should not be in the community for now | Disable member |
| A member should lose the product altogether | Remove from community in Members list |
Good to know
A row tagged Auto-hidden means the content was hidden automatically after a set number of reports, before you looked at it. Dismiss makes it visible again; Remove deletes it. This threshold is off by default and has no switch in the editor: ask the Assistant to set it for your community.
