Member profiles, connections and messages
What members can do around each other in a community: view profiles, browse the members directory, connect, send private messages, and use the account menu.
A community is also a place where members get to know each other. This article describes the member side: profiles, the directory, connections, private messages and the account menu. Use it to answer member questions and to decide which of these features you keep on.
The profile panel
Clicking a member's name or avatar anywhere in the community slides in a Profile panel from the right.
| Part | Content |
|---|---|
| Header | Name, avatar, and with gamification on: level, XP and the activity streak. |
| Actions | Message, Connect (or Pending / Connected), and for people with moderation rights a shield button, Moderate. |
| Connections | The number of the member's connections, when they have any. |
| About tab | Profile info, Biography and Social media links. |
| Posts tab | The member's posts. A post that is only a video, a photo or a voice message is listed with a label instead of text. |
| Comments tab | The member's comments. Clicking one closes the panel and opens the post scrolled to that comment. |
On their own profile a member sees no Message or Connect buttons. Instead they can edit their details and avatar, and they get a fourth tab, Notifications (Notifications and announcements). Opening a profile does not interrupt a video that is playing in the feed.
The members directory
The Members tab is shown when Members display is set to Show full members list (Set up a community).
| Element | What it does |
|---|---|
| All members / My connections | Switches between the whole directory and the member's own contacts, with Invitations and Sent requests. |
| Search members... | Narrows the directory as the member types. |
| Members / Admins / Online | Filters the list, with a count on each. |
| Tags | Narrows the list to one tag. |
| Map view | Shows members on a map. Only members who added their city in profile settings and opted into the map appear. |
Connections
Send a request
On someone's profile, or on their card in the directory, the member clicks Connect. The Connect with [name] window offers an optional note; Send request confirms with Connection request sent and the button changes to Pending.
Accept or decline
The other member is notified in the bell and, by default, by email. They answer with Accept or Decline under My connections → Invitations. The sender can Withdraw request while it is pending.
Stay connected
Once accepted, both sides show Connected and appear in each other's My connections. Remove connection ends it.
Private messages
Members write to each other 1:1. The entry point is the Messages icon in the community header, or the Message button on a profile.
| Feature | Detail |
|---|---|
| Start | New message, then search for a member. |
| Inbox | Conversations with All and Unread tabs and Search messages. |
| Content | Text of up to 4,000 characters, up to 4 images per message (JPEG, PNG, GIF or WebP, 10 MB each), and voice messages. |
| On a message | Reply, add a reaction, Edit message, Delete message ("removed for everyone in the conversation"). |
| Notifications | A bell notification and, by default, an email: "New message from [sender] in community [community name]". |
The same inbox holds the member's direct thread with you and your team. That side of the conversation is described in The inbox: direct messages.
To switch member-to-member messages off for the whole community, turn off Private messages between members in Settings → Access & features. The Message buttons and the composer disappear, and existing conversations stay readable with the notice "Private messages are turned off in this community." Your own thread with each client is not affected.
The account menu
The avatar in the top-right corner opens the member's account menu. It starts with their name and email, which helps people who use more than one address.
| Entry | Opens |
|---|---|
| Profile | The member's own profile panel in this community. |
| My Products | The library of everything they have access to (/app/library). |
| Purchases & billing | Subscriptions, one-time purchases and payment history (/app/account/purchases). |
| My Certificates | Their course certificates. Shown only when it applies to them. |
| Settings | Account settings (/app/settings/profile). |
| Get the app | Links to the mobile app stores. |
| Log out | Ends the session. |
Good to know
Moderators see one more control on other people's profiles: the shield button with mute and disable actions, described in Moderate a community. Regular members never see it.
