Gamification
Turn on XP, levels and leaderboards in a community, award XP for completed course lessons, lock channels behind a member level, and understand daily activity streaks.
Gamification rewards members whose contributions others find useful. Members earn XP, climb nine levels, appear on leaderboards and keep a daily streak. It is off by default; when you finish these steps it is running in your community.
Turn it on
Open the Gamification tab
In the community editor go to Settings and open the Gamification tab
(/communities/<productId>/editor/settings/gamification).
Flip the main switch
Turn on Gamification (XP, levels & leaderboards). Two more sections appear under it: Course XP and Level-gated channels.
Optionally reward lessons
Turn on Course XP and set XP per lesson, from 1 to 50. Members then earn that many XP for every lesson they complete in your courses.
Optionally gate channels by level
Under Level-gated channels each channel has a selector: No level gate or Level 2+ up to Level 9+. Members below the chosen level cannot access the channel.
Save
Click Save. Members see their progress the next time they load the community, and a Leaderboards tab appears in the community menu.
How members earn XP
| Action | XP |
|---|---|
| Another member likes your post or comment | +1 for you |
| That like is taken back | -1 |
| You complete a course lesson (with Course XP on) | + the XP per lesson value |
| You un-complete that lesson | The same amount is taken back |
| Writing a post or a comment | 0 |
| Liking something yourself, including your own content | 0 |
| A like on a chat message | 0, only likes on posts and comments count |
Completing a lesson shows a toast in the course: "+5 XP earned in your community 🎉" (with your own value). Ticking, un-ticking and ticking the same lesson again never multiplies points: the member ends with the lesson's XP once.
Levels
XP adds up to a level. The thresholds are fixed:
| Level | 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 | 7 | 8 | 9 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| XP required | 0 | 5 | 20 | 65 | 155 | 515 | 2,015 | 8,015 | 33,015 |
Reaching a level shows a short confetti burst with "Level up! You reached Level 2 🎉" and a bell notification "You reached Level 2 in [community name]! 🎉". Losing XP can drop a member back a level; there is no notification for going down.
What members see
| Element | Where |
|---|---|
| Progress box | A strip at the bottom of the channel list (Sidebar layout) or a card in the right column (Topbar layout): avatar, level, XP and a progress bar. |
| How XP works | The ⓘ icon next to the XP opens the rules and the level table, with the member's level highlighted. |
| Level badge | A small Lv. badge next to the author's name on posts, and level and XP in the member's profile. |
| Leaderboards tab | Boards for Last 7 days, Last 30 days and All time, plus the share of members at each level. Only members who earned XP are listed. |
| Right column | Leaderboard (30-day) next to the feed. |
You see the same data in the editor's Overview: the activity chart, Member levels and Leaderboard.
Daily streaks
A member who is active on a given day (a post, a comment, a reaction or a completed lesson) grows a streak, shown as a flame with the number of days next to their XP.
| Rule | Detail |
|---|---|
| Missed days | Up to two missed days per month are forgiven automatically. More than that and the streak starts over. |
| Milestones | At 7, 30 and 100 days the member gets a bell notification: "You're on a 7-day activity streak in [community name]! 🔥" |
| Taking XP back | A streak marks that the member was active that day. It is not taken back when a like or a lesson is undone. |
Turning gamification off
Switching the main switch off hides the progress box, the Leaderboards tab and the level badges, and stops XP from being counted. Nothing is deleted: turning it back on restores everyone's XP and level. Activity that happened while it was off earns nothing afterwards, because points are never awarded retroactively. Level gates stop applying while gamification is off.
Good to know
A level-gated channel is hidden from members below the level: they do not see it in the channel list, the feed or the search until they reach it. Combine gates with Course XP to open a channel to people who are working through your course.
